In 2009, Sik Sik Yuen invested millions of dollars and secured the assistance of Dr. William Mak, an international biotechnology education expert, to set up the first biotechnology mobile laboratory built on bus frames in Asia to contribute to popularizing science education in Hong Kong.
The Sik Sik Yuen Biotechnology Mobile Laboratory (BML) Program was set up on a 12-meter-long special purpose vehicle as a molecular biology laboratory designed for teachers and students of primary and secondary school. The laboratory is fully equipped and self-contained. In addition to having university level laboratory equipment, it also has barrier-free facilities to allow students with disabilities to use the laboratory. Solar energy and other environmental protection devices were also installed due to full consideration of the importance of environmental protection. The mobile laboratory (MobileLab) is able to arrive directly at the school using the service, each time allowing up to 40 teachers and students to have immediate personal access to advanced scientific instruments for science and biotechnology teaching and learning. It can also be arranged to go to schools to provide school-based professional training courses for the teachers, and help schools develop school-based biotechnology laboratories. During weekends and school holidays, the laboratory is also used to organize various outreach activities to promote biotechnology education at the community level.
The establishment of the Sik Sik Yuen Biotechnology Mobile Laboratory has broken through traffic barriers, as it offers more flexible methods to promote biotechnology education at the community level through various outreach activities, allowing biotechnology knowledge to be spread more widely at a faster rate.
