Caring for the Elderly

In order to response to challenges on “home Care for Elderly Persons” and “Residential Care Services” in the future, Ho Yam Care and Attention Home for the Elderly (Sponsored by Sik Sik Yuen) set up the “Training Centre for Rehabilitation Services and Home Care Services”, which is the first professional training centre in Hong Kong to provide professional trainings of Rehabilitation Services and Home Care Services simultaneously. The opening ceremony was held on 13 November, 2018, with the hope to play a leading role among elderly service community.

The centre organized the first Occupational Safety and Health Training Course in 2018 for staff to enhance the safety consciousness. 

 

The centre organized standard first aid certificate course, certificate in acupressure first aid course, basic life support course. Over 90% of students who finished the courses thought they can apply the fist aid skills in their service through the courses. Due to the clear teaching syllabus and sufficient practice training, students are more confident to cope with the cases.

The Training Centre organized four sets of assessments and training for nurses and health workers in 2019. The “Wound Care” training course explained the types of wounds, nursing methods, types of dressings and application methods to enhance heath carers’ professional assessment and analysis capabilities of wounds. The training also taught employees that they must make accurate wound assessments and keep records to help monitor the recovery of wounds.


   

A three-day “Domestic Helper Training Course” was completed at the Training Centre in 2019. This training taught domestic helpers how to feed elders, lifting techniques and exercise precautions. The aim of the course was to teach domestic helpers who took the course how to take care of elders safely, and at the same time, safeguard their health and help elders exercise to maintain their activity and health. In the end, 7 domestic helpers completed the course.

 

  

In 2019, the organization added a new role called “Community Care Programmer”. The training Centre designed a five-unit induction training course for the relevant duties of this position and organized the relevant training for 11 new community care programmers who joined the organization in April 2019.
